US Air Force Utilizes Banned DJI Drones for Nuclear Missile Training

The US Air Force is set to incorporate DJI drones into its training exercises at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. The decision involves the purchase of Chinese-made drones for counter-drone training, aimed at enhancing security measures at the base. F.E. Warren, which oversees Minuteman III missiles, considers protection against aerial intrusions a critical aspect of its security protocols.

The 90th Contracting Squadron recently issued a solicitation for banned DJI drones, seeking two refurbished DJI Mavic 2 Pro quadcopters and other drone models for training purposes. These systems are intended to support training in counter-small unmanned aircraft operations, including detection, electronic warfare techniques, and strategies for neutralizing drones. The Air Force's rationale for selecting DJI drones stems from the need to replicate real-world threats accurately, as adversaries are likely to deploy similar devices.

The procurement is classified as a brand-name requirement, signifying the Air Force's preference for DJI hardware over alternative options. The justification for this choice lies in the unique radio signals and flight systems offered by DJI drones, which differ from those of competing products. Despite the preference for DJI drones, the procurement process allows for multiple authorized resellers to fulfill the requirement, potentially resulting in a small-business set-aside rather than a direct contract with DJI.

To address cybersecurity concerns, the purchased DJI drones will undergo a software enhancement known as RIZER, designed to prevent unauthorized communications with foreign entities or Department of War networks. This software will replace the drones' native firmware, creating a secure training environment. Similar initiatives are reportedly underway at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana, indicating a broader strategy within the Global Strike Command to standardize threat simulations across missile bases.
