Micron Stock Dips 4% On Chinese Competitor's Breakthrough

Micron Technology stock fell more than 4 percent Monday to approximately $984, still up 245 percent year to date, after Chinese memory maker ChangXin Memory Technologies announced over the weekend that it had achieved "key progress" on a new 4F square DRAM architecture that could significantly increase storage density in server chips.

CXMT president Cao Kanyu said at an industrial conference in Shanghai that the company plans to introduce a new DDR5 server memory product based on the design before the end of 2026.

SK Hynix also fell more than 4 percent. Western Digital dropped 2 percent. The entire memory sector sold off.

The context that matters: analysts are divided on how serious the threat actually is.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that CXMT's technology still trails Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron by two to three generations.

Barron's notes that CXMT's chips currently cost as much as Korean or Western alternatives despite being less advanced, not an obvious formula for stealing market share. Quadri analyst noted the threat may be less sharp than feared.

But CXMT is moving fast. Its fifth-generation DRAM platform entered mass production last month.

It raised $8.6 billion in a Shanghai IPO in July. Its production capacity is approaching Micron's. Even if today's chip trails by two generations, the direction of travel is the story, and the market is pricing in the long-term risk even as analysts defend the near-term fundamentals.
