China's commercial space industry is crossing a major inflection point, shifting its focus from high-cost technology testing and orbital constellation building toward large-scale commercial monetization and industrial mass production.
The industry transition was highlighted by commercial satellite operator Geespace, also known as Shikong Daoyu, securing China's first commercial trial license for satellite Internet of Things (IoT) services from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The two-year approval integrates private satellite IoT operations into the national telecommunications regulatory framework, allowing Geespace to provide global connectivity across automotive, maritime, logistics, and emergency sectors.
Geespace currently operates a first-phase low-Earth orbit constellation of 64 satellites capable of processing roughly 340 million communications daily. The firm has already delivered more than 20,000 satellite-connected smart vehicles and expanded testing into autonomous Robotaxi fleets with Cao Cao Mobility, accumulating nearly 100,000 kilometers of real-world trials across multiple cities.
The core logic of China's commercial space market appears to be pivoting from satellite assembly and launch speed toward network operation, scene penetration, and revenue generation. The shift mirrors global trends, where commercial satellite operations generate the vast majority of space economy revenues, demonstrated by SpaceX reporting $12.5 billion in total revenue during the first half of 2026.
This commercial expansion is being accelerated by breakthrough reductions in launch costs. In July 2026, China completed its first sea recovery of the Long March 10B first-stage rocket, followed in August by LandSpace's successful land recovery of its orbital-class Zhuque-3 rocket first stage. Reusable rocket breakthroughs are expected to slash launch costs by 50 to 70 percent, clearing transport bottlenecks for massive megaconstellations like Spacesail and GW, which have planned combined deployments of approximately 28,000 satellites.
To support this shift into mass production, domestic supply chain providers are restructuring their operations. Environmental and reliability testing firm Xice Testing is deploying a commercial space super-foundry model in partnership with Western Aerospace Technology. Backed by a planned 3.8 billion yuan ($530 million) investment in Xi'an, the initiative aims to establish annual production capacity for 1,000 low-Earth orbit satellites and 100 medium-sized liquid rockets within five years, cutting customer manufacturing costs by 30 percent and delivery cycles by half.
Looking beyond immediate commercial applications, private space enterprises are positioning themselves for next-generation telecommunications standards. Geespace is leading research on integrating satellite IoT into national 6G standards, developing narrow-band and wide-band Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technologies to directly challenge overseas operators as space-ground integrated networks mature worldwide.
