CNNIC: Chinese Users Lost Domain Names After Earthquake

A representative from the China Internet Network Information Center says mainland China has lost up to 10000 .com domain names as a result of the earthquake that occurred in Taiwan at the end of 2006.

Statistics from CNNIC show that about 10000 Chinese .com users have lost their domain names because they could not pay the renewal fee after the seabed cable broke after the earthquake. This has led to many of those domain names being registered by others.

According to relevant rules, domain name service providers will not take responsibility for the loss of domain names as a result of untimely payment. However, some domain holders should be able to take legal action against the new owners of the names if those names are part of trademarks or if the new owner has purchased the name in bad faith.
