China Unicom (CHU) has begun to set foot in the new value-added service sector by launching a mobile phone newspaper in cooperation with People's Daily.

Li Zhengmao, vice president of China Unicom, says that the People's Daily-China Unicom Mobile Phone Newspaper is based on China Unicom's mobile phone platform and it is similar to reading news online. Li says that the service is available to China Unicom's CDMA users after they download relevant software.

At present, the cost of the new service is CNY5 per month, and China Unicom and People's Daily will share the income from this service.

China Unicom disclosed that it is discussing with People's Daily on introducing the latter's affiliated newspapers like Global Times and Beijing Times to mobile phone users soon.
