State Grid Corporation of China Snubs Nose At Microsoft

State Grid Corporation of China and Kingsoft have reached an agreement for the monolithic State Grid to purchase WPS Office 2007, a office software product from Kingsoft.

With this agreement, all the units of State Grid throughout China, including 31 regional grid corporations and 21 units directly under the State Grid, will use this China-made office software with independent intellectual property rights in their computers.

In the past, Chinese government agencies have warned about the over-reliance on foreign-crafted software, like those created by Microsoft, because of possible security exploits. Qiu Bojun, president and CEO of Kingsoft, says that WPS Office is software that can compete with similar foreign products. Its high quality and innovative technology have been widely recognized, and in 2004 to 2005 the company says it helped the Chinese government save over CNY500 million.
