Chinese commercial space company GalaxySpace delivered a complete satellite system to Thailand, marking Beijing’s first full-service commercial export of satellite manufacturing, launch, and on-orbit operational delivery to a Southeast Asian nation.
The GISTDA CubeSat 1 was launched into orbit aboard a Long March 6C rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center alongside six other payloads. Developed for Thailand's Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), the satellite will gather surface remote-sensing data for land monitoring, agricultural management, and ecological protection, while serving as an educational platform for Thai university students in satellite design and tracking operations.
Thai and Chinese officials framed the project as a shift from simple hardware purchasing toward deeper technology transfer. GISTDA Deputy Executive Director Phee Choosri noted that the partnership combines data collection with local workforce development, while GalaxySpace Co-Founder Liu Chang stated that the firm intends to use the milestone to expand satellite deployments across Belt and Road partner countries.
The export arrives as several Southeast Asian nations evaluate domestic launch infrastructure to capture a share of the expanding global space economy. Thailand has been conducting feasibility studies for a commercial equatorial spaceport, aiming to capitalize on its near-equatorial latitude to lower rocket fuel consumption costs by up to 20 percent. Elsewhere in the region, Indonesia has repeatedly revisited plans for an equatorial spaceport on Biak Island, though financial constraints and regulatory hurdles have slowed progress.
Until native Southeast Asian launch pads materialize, Chinese commercial firms are bridging the geographic gap via low-latitude facilities in southern China. The newly expanded commercial spaceport in Wenchang, Hainan alongside mobile sea-launch platforms operating from the Haiyang Oriental Spaceport provides near-equatorial trajectory options tailored for Southeast Asian constellation operators seeking cost-effective orbital insertion.
