Samsung-Backed Firm Deepens Ties With Chinese Chipmaker as Silicon Carbide Trade Heats Up

Shares of Tianyu Semiconductor Technology surged more than 8% on Monday, as Chinese investors cheered a strategic alliance between the Chinese firm and a South Korean specialist backed by Samsung Electronics. The move highlights how established global tech giants are continuing to foster deep, cross-border ties with Chinese semiconductor players, even as Western governments attempt to ring-fence the industry.

Tianyu Semiconductor (02658.HK) saw its stock climb to 47.16 Hong Kong dollars in midday trading, at one point gaining more than 10%. The rally was ignited by the firm's ongoing partnership with EYEQ Lab Inc., a leading South Korean player in the third-generation semiconductor space.

The collaboration centers on Silicon Carbide (SiC) epitaxial wafers, a critical material used in power semiconductors for electric vehicles and renewable energy grids. By aligning with a South Korean partner, Tianyu is effectively plugging itself into a global supply chain that enjoys significant backing from Samsung, the world’s largest memory chipmaker.

What has particularly piqued the interest of market observers is the pedigree of the South Korean partner. EYEQ Lab is a prominent developer of SiC power chips that has received strategic investment from Patron, a subsidiary of Samsung. Samsung Electronics itself has been aggressively pivoting toward SiC technology, recently forming a dedicated team to capture the growing demand for high-efficiency chips in the automotive sector.

Through this "indirect" channel, Samsung-linked capital and expertise are helping a Chinese firm validate its technology on the global stage. For Tianyu, the partnership provides more than just a stable customer for its wafers; it provides a stamp of approval from the South Korean tech ecosystem, which remains a vital bridge between Chinese manufacturing and global markets.

The deal underscores the limits of U.S.-led efforts to isolate China’s semiconductor industry. While Washington has focused its most stringent export controls on advanced logic chips used for artificial intelligence, "mature" or "specialty" semiconductors like Silicon Carbide have become a gray zone where cross-border cooperation remains robust.

By partnering with a South Korean firm that sits within the Samsung investment umbrella, Tianyu is positioning itself to bypass potential trade friction that might arise from a purely domestic Chinese supply chain. For global firms like Samsung, maintaining these links allows them to tap into China’s massive EV market—the largest in the world—where SiC demand is currently exploding.

However, the partnership also raises questions for Western regulators. As China pursues its "Two Autonomies" mandate—seeking to build an impenetrable domestic tech foundation—alliances with South Korean firms provide a critical flow of technical standards and market access that Beijing cannot yet generate on its own.

As of Monday afternoon, Tianyu’s trading volume remained elevated, reflecting a market that sees the company’s industry standing enhanced by its South Korean ties. For Western rivals, the deal serves as a reminder that the digital "fortress" Beijing is building often has its foundations reinforced by foreign capital and expertise.
