As OTA tracking improves, OEMs face increased security and compliance challenges

Since 2020, popular policies and OTA oversight have made significant progress. In June 2020, the Global Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP. 29) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) approved UN Regulation No. 156 – Software Update and Software Update Management System, which took effect in January 2021. This is the first foreign regulation on vehicle software updates and software update management. To this end, many vendors have introduced similar OTA compliance.

Regarding supervision, China’s State Administration of Market Regulation issued a statement on strengthening the follow-up of automotive OTA generation recalls on November 23, 2020. In June 2021, it issued an additional statement related to the filing of an automotive OTA generation recall to provide more detailed description of automotive OTA generation recalls.

After the publication of the policy, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Tesla in China issued recall notices of OTA vehicles due in June 2021, and all said in their recall announcements that they would update the software of the recalled vehicles. via OTA if situations allow.
